Global Navigation Satellite System
When talking about satellite navigation systems the most suitable application is the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). This is the generic name used to describe any global system of satellites that transmit signals for navigation purposes on Earth. The terms GPS or GLONASS are often referred to in relation to Satellite Tracking Systems so we need to be careful using these terms because they only relate to one of the four satellite systems used for navigation purposes. For example the Global Positioning System (GPS) was created by the American Military many years ago but there are a number of Navigation Satellite Systems such as the Russian military system Global Orbiting Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS), Europe has Galileo and China has developed the system BeiDou-2. This is important to note because quality tracking equipment will use utilise more than one satellite network for accurate and reliable tracking.
