Smoke and Fire Detection Maintenance Requirements
To comply with Australian Standards AS 1670, AS 3786, and AS 1851, all smoke and fire detection devices—particularly those interconnected with a monitored alarm system—must be regularly tested, maintained, and inspected.
- Residential Customers: Smoke alarms must meet AS 3786 and be tested and cleaned at regular intervals to ensure reliable operation. Interconnected alarms that form part of your monitored security system should be maintained as per the manufacturer’s recommendations and verified to report correctly to the monitoring station.
- Commercial Customers: Fire detection and alarm systems, including any smoke detection integrated with your monitored security system, are subject to inspection and testing under AS 1670 and ongoing maintenance requirements under AS 1851. This includes six-monthly functional testing and annual inspection of connected systems and detectors.
Routine servicing not only helps ensure early warning in the event of a fire but also maintains compliance with regulatory requirements and insurance obligations.
